I saw a video clip from an airshow today, and it reminded me of the time I attended a one-of-a-kind airshow at Biggs Army Airfield when we, me and the man I was married to then, were stationed at Ft Bliss, Texas. This show was right after Desert Storm, and most of our men and women had come home already.
I don’t believe there’s ever been an airshow on US soil like this one before or since. They simulated different air strikes that soldiers had performed in Iraq, where Richard had been fighting. We watched things being blown up, and I went inside a bomber plane. Richard came home a different person. Many soldiers returned with what they later called Gulf War syndrome. He was physically sick and cruel now; he was neither before he left.
Just thinking about that triggered memories of the years spent in Texas. There were several major life-altering events that happened there, but in a way that really wasn’t new or surprising to me anymore. It was just what my life was.
